Braces-Friendly Snacks to Enjoy Anytime

Home ยป Our Blog ยป Braces-Friendly Snacks to Enjoy Anytime

This time, we’re looking at braces-friendly snacks. In previous blog posts, we’ve looked at foods to eat with braces and foods to avoid.

Fortunately, there are lots of delicious options. So, you can enjoy snacks and desserts throughout treatment. By knowing what to choose, you can avoid possibly damaging your braces. Thus, you can keep your treatment on track and avoid emergency visits for repairs.

Braces-friendly Snacks

When it comes to choosing a snack, remember to avoid items that are hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy. Such foods can get stuck and damage the wire and loosen brackets.

Instead, choose braces-friendly snacks that are soft without things like hard nuts or sticky toppings.

Snacks you can enjoy:

  • Cooked, roasted, steamed veggies
  • Soft veggies like avocado, squash, cucumber, mushrooms, tomatoes, peas
  • Salads with soft veggies (no sticky dressings or crunchy toppings)
  • Eggs (omelets, hard-boiled, scrambled)
  • Oatmeal
  • Pasta, mac and cheese
  • Soft veggie burgers and patties, tofu
  • Smoothies, milkshakes, ice cream (if not cold sensitive)
  • Applesauce, yogurt, pudding
  • Cookies, crackers, and cake
  • Solid soft chocolate (no nuts)
  • Peanut butter (smooth without nuts)
  • Marshmallows
  • Soft pretzels, cheese puffs
  • Soft cheese, Cottage cheese
  • Jell-O
  • Mashed potatoes
  • seafood, chop into small pieces
  • Hummus and soft bean dips
  • Most fruit (chop up harder items like apples or carrots into small pieces)
  • Soft bread or muffins without a hard crust or nuts
  • Soft tortillas and wraps
  • Pancakes and waffles (without sticky syrup)
  • Soft sandwiches
  • Most soups and chili
  • Sliced sandwich meats
  • Meatballs
  • Cooked soft rice (no sticky or crunchy ingredients)
  • Chopped boneless chicken (avoid fried, wings, crunchy or sticky)
  • Soft chicken nuggets
  • Soft pizza without hard crust
  • Chicken salad without nuts or hard veggies

As you can see, these braces-friendly snacks offer a wide range of possibilities. Many times, you can buy pre-packaged snacks like fruit cups and soft cookies to carry with you. Just remember to avoid any items that are hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy.

Where to Find More Ideas

For more ideas, try checking out Pinterest, where you can find a million recipes and pictures of braces-friendly snacks, meals, and desserts.

And, we sometimes share ideas on our social media, Instagram and Facebook.

At Mill Creek, we love sharing soft dippin’ dots as a delicious reward for our patients. And, we support our local Girl Scouts, donating delicious cookies to our local first responders.

When you wear braces, you can still enjoy an occasional sweet treat. As always, it’s best to limit sugary foods and drinks. Here are some recommendations from the American Association of Orthodontists.

Rinse and Brush After Snacks

Always, rinse or preferably brush after snacks, meals, or drinks other than water. Of course, brushing is especially important if you have a sugary snack or drink to help avoid tooth decay.

If, for any reason, you find that a bracket has come loose from your teeth, contact us. Right away, we’ll schedule an appointment to repair any damage to keep your treatment on track.

We hope this list of braces-friendly snacks has been helpful. Fortunately, when wearing braces, you can still enjoy many delicious snacks. Importantly, by sticking to the safer options, your treatment will go faster. Soon, you can enjoy any items you have taken a break from for a temporary while.

Remember: When you see your new smile, it will all be worth it! Then, you can reward yourself with any items you have missed.

My preteen daughter is on her second phase of braces and she has 0 fear about going to the orthodontist office. They make it so fun to be there— she gets a sweet treat after every visit from the staff— it’s just a nice pop in, catch up, and change her braces colors. We are literally in and out with a smile on her face! We love that the staff remembers her each visit and always checks in with how she’s been doing. We are so excited to see the finalized smile soon!
Response from the owner:Ah Chelsea, reading your review put a huge smile on our faces! Seeing your daughter grow through each phase of treatment has been such a joy, and it means the world to know that she walks into our office feeling comfortable, confident, and excited to be here. We love that her appointments have become more than just braces visits! They're a chance to catch up, hear what's new in her world, pick out fun colors, and celebrate the little milestones along the way. One of the things we cherish most is getting to know our patients as individuals, so hearing that she feels remembered and cared for at each visit is incredibly special to us. Thank you for allowing us to be part of this chapter in her life. We know how much dedication goes into the braces journey, and we're just as excited as you are to see that beautiful final smile revealed soon! - Dr. Markus and the MCO Team!

Mill Creek Orthodontics makes getting braces easy and fun. My daughter loves the ice cream and other swag!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the kind words! We love hearing that your daughter is enjoying her experience with us. We believe orthodontic treatment should feel exciting and positive from start to finish, and weโ€™re so happy the little extras like the ice cream and swag have made visits even more fun for her. Thank you for trusting our team with her smile, we truly appreciate your family being part of our orthodontic family! - Dr. Markus and the MCO Team!
Brigette C.
We brought our daughter here after another office recommended treatment that seemed way more aggressive than necessary. This orthodontist took a much more balanced approach and explained that not every issue needs to be corrected immediately. That honesty made us trust them right away. The assistants are very good with nervous kids and keep conversations light so appointments don’t feel intimidating. My daughter was terrified before getting braces, but by the end of the visit she was surprisingly relaxed. There was one small issue where a bracket came loose after she bit into hard candy, but the office got us scheduled quickly without making us feel judged about it. After several months, her smile is already much straighter and she’s noticeably more confident around classmates and relatives.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for sharing this thoughtful feedback. Weโ€™re really glad you felt confident in our more balanced approach and that taking the time to explain everything helped you feel comfortable with your daughterโ€™s treatment plan. Itโ€™s also wonderful to hear she has felt more at ease during her visits, our team works hard to make sure kids feel calm and supported every step of the way. Weโ€™re happy we could quickly help with the bracket issue as well and keep things on track without added stress. Most of all, we love hearing about her growing confidence and progress. Thank you again for trusting us with her smile, and we truly appreciate your family being part of our practice. - Dr. Markus and the MCO Team!
